-Traditional Japanese Pentatonic Scales & quartal harmony
Traditional
pentatonic scales can be understood and heard in light of modern
quartal harmony. The three examples are of traditional Japanese
pentatonic scales but this approach works with any pentatonic scale
that is in the 12356 inversion.
Below
are the "Pelog, Hirajoshi and Kumoi" pentatonic scales.
I have included a "?" simply because I do not know the
correct "traditional" inversion of the scales. With that
said, you can understand and hear the tones as a series of 4ths
making them relevant to a more modern "western" conception
of harmony. The scales in their new inversions have a more open
"quartal" sound as well as a different root feeling.
